Welcome to chatsafer.co.uk – a parental guide to safer chatting on the web.

If you have a child who uses the Internet and you want to make sure they are safe online, this site is for you.

In general, children are pretty confident on the web but this does not mean that they are always safe. By using your skills as a parent and by making your children aware of some common sense do's and dont's, you can ensure that they continue to enjoy the Internet, safely and happily.

Whether your child accesses the web from a PC or their mobile phone, start taking an interest in what they're doing. Talk to them and let them know they can come to you if they have any problems. Talking is the best way to keep them safe on line.

But you also need to keep them informed – a daunting task as our kids often know more about the web than we do. But don't panic, helpful advice is available on this website.

Where next?

There are two main areas of risk on the web: chatting online (in chatrooms) and viewing unsuitable material. The following pages offer practical advice to reduce these risks:

People in chatrooms aren't always who they say they are ... how do we protect our children?
